Kenmare Connected Short Story Competition

The Kenmare Chronicle and Mill Cove Gallery warmly invite everyone connected to Kenmare to take part in our Short Story Competition, inspired by the theme:
“Our yesterdays, today, and tomorrows.”
Please include a related photograph with your story if possible.

Competition Details

Eligibility: Open to everyone aged 18 and older

Story length: 500 to 1500 words
-
Submission fee: €10 (non-refundable) (Administration Charge €1.00)*
Prizes

Winner: €400
-
Second place: €200
-
Third place: €100
A shortlist of stories will be published in an anthology, launched on 6 August at the Carnegie Arts Centre
Guidelines for Submissions

Originality: Stories must be original, unpublished, and fully authored by the participant (no AI-generated content).

Language: Submissions must be in English, or accompanied by an English translation if written in another language.

Format: Submit as a Microsoft Word file (.doc or .docx).

Optional: include a related photo, drawing, or painting. Stories should be double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman or similar font, with numbered pages.

Judging and Results

All entries will be judged anonymously.

Winners and shortlisted writers will be notified by email or text and announced on the festival website
* There is no administration charge if you submit directly to Mill Cove Gallery
Publication and Copyright

Winning and shortlisted stories will be published in an anthology
· Recognition: Winning and commended stories will be celebrated at a public reading event during the Kenmare Arts Festival at the Carnegie Arts Centre, Kenmare.
· Publication: Selected stories, including category winners, will be published in a printed anthology. Submission of an entry grants The Kenmare Chronicle permission to include the work in the anthology and related public readings or online features. Personal information will be retained only for the duration of the competition and publication process.
· Copyright: Copyright remains with the author. However, by entering, participants grant The Kenmare Chronicle a non-exclusive license to publish and publicly present the submitted work in connection with the competition.
Data Protection
· Personal information, including name, address, and email, will be processed following applicable data protection laws.
· By entering the competition, participants agree to be contacted regarding the results.
Additional Notes
· Retention of Entries: Submissions will not be returned. Please retain a copy of your work.
· Publication Timeline: Submissions will be made from 7 April to 30 May 2025, followed by editing, arrangement, and publication of the anthology in time for the Kenmare Arts Festival 2025.
